Recently (Wednesday, 12 April 2023) a multi–nation delegation of sport executive students swapped their state-of-the-art lecture room at the Nelson Mandela University High Performance Centre, Gqeberha, for a much-anticipated visit to one of the oldest newspapers in South Africa, The Herald.

 

GLOBAL RECOGNITION … Max Grünewald and Warren Hartland, who completed the international FIFA/CIES Sport Management programme at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University last year, have come second in the 2016 FIFA/CIES Network competition. 

Yoliswa Lumka from South Africa and Olawale Olopade from Nigeria, both alumnus of the FIFA/CIES/NMMU programme in Sport Management, were voted into the International Wheelchair Basketball  Federation Executive Committee.

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) officially gave  certificates to the 18 students who participated in the 8th edition of the NMMU/FIFA/CIES Programme  last week at a glittering occasion held at the Beach Hotel in Port Elizabeth. 

The NMMU officially welcomed 28 new students to its prestigious and well established FIFA/CIES/NMMU Sport Management short learning programme on Monday 7 September 2015.  There to welcome the students were Prof Victor Exner (Dean of the Faculty), Prof Rosa du Randt (Director of the School of Lifestyle Sciences and Mr Vincent Monnier (Senior Manager for International Relations at the CIES, which is based at the University of Neuchatel in Switzerland.

A total of 28 students arrived for the programme which equals the highest number of students ever taken since the qualifications inception in 2007.

The students come from all across South Africa as well as three students from neighbouring countries in Africa, namely Zambia, Nigeria and Zimbabwe.

The staff at the NMMU and CIES wish the new group everything of the very best with their studies.

Luleka Haya (9th edition FIFA/CIES/NMMU student) was recently elected as the 2nd Vice President of University Sport South Africa (USSA).  Luleka hails from Bhisho in the Eastern Cape, has a B Comm degree and is the owner of Six Star Lifestyle Events and Marketing.  Luleka also recently served as the Head of the South African delegation to the 2015 FISU Winter Universiade held in Spain.  Congratulations Luleka! 

Applications for the 9th Edition of the internationally acclaimed FIFA/CIES/NMMU Post Graduate Certificate in Sport Management Programme are now being invited.   The NMMU is the only university in South and southern Africa who are contracted by the International Centre for Sport Studies (CIES) to offer this qualification.  It must also be noted that the course is not football specific but applicable to all sports.

An application form can be downloaded from the CIES or NMMU Websites.  Hard copies of the brochure/application form can also be obtained from the HMS department or sent via the post.

Closing date for applications is 02 June 2015.  The programme commences on 07 September 2015.

Comparing women’s football in Germany and South Africa, and proposing some recommendations to develop the practice of this sport here, led to FIFA and the International Centre for Sport Studies (CIES) awarding two Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) students with the 2014 Fifa/CIES International University Network Prize.

Jonathan Rumbelow (current student) has been appointed as the Coach/Manager of the South African Triathlon team which will be competing at the ITU Africa Continental Championships in Agadir, Morocco later this week. The team consists of 21 athletes, the biggest team South Africa has sent to an Africa Championship event. Also to Zarina Bahdur (past student who graduated top of her class in 2011/12) has been accepted into the prestigious FIFA Master programme which starts in September this year. 

The representatives of 15 universities gathered for two and a half days of intense discussions during the 3rd Seminar of the FIFA/CIES International University Network held in Buenos Aires from 12 to 14 April.

The 3rd block week of lectures for the 20111 edition FIFA/CIES/NMMU Sport management students were held during the Easter student recess period from 2 to 7 April 2012. In this week the students completed the Sport Communication module under the expert guidance of Ms Debbie Derry and then started the Financial Management module with Mr Gavin Hustler.

Friday 10 December 2010 was a night to be remembered for seventeen 3rd Edition FIFA/CIES/NMMU Sport Management students as they celebrated the successful completion of their qualification at an auspicious certificate presentation ceremony held at the NMMU Conference Centre.

Dave Emslie (CEO of Eastern province Cricket and the Chevrolet Warriors Franchise) and Vincent Monnier (Senior Manager for International Relations at CIES) were the guest speakers during the 2nd block of lectures of the NMMU 2010 edition students which ran from 6 to 11 December.

Faik Houlie and Calvin Lopes who are currently completing the CIES/NMMU Certificate in Sport Management obtained their B Human Movement Science degrees from the NMMU at a spectacular graduation ceremony yesterday.

Graham Terblanche - cum laude graduate of the 2010 edition FIFA/CIES/NMMU Certificate in Sport Management successfully completed his 3rd Ironman Africa race held in Port Elizabeth on Sunday 10 April 2011.

April the 25th 2011 – yes, Easter Monday saw the 2010 Edition students “report” for their 3rd block of lectures which ran until Saturday 30 April. This of course meant the students also sacrificed another public holiday during the week as Freedom Day was celebrated on 27 April!

Applications for the 2011 Edition of the internationally acclaimed FIFA/CIES/NMMU Post Graduate Certificate in Sport Management Programme are now being invited. This qualification covers all major elements to managing sport, namely strategic management, marketing, communication, law, finance, sponsorship and event management.

The FIFA/CIES/NMMU students took another step towards completing their qualification as the final block week of lectures took place from 27 June to 2 July in the now all too familiar Seminar Room of the 2nd Ave Campus of NMMU.

Solomon Mudege, a graduate of the NMMU Department of Human Movement Science and the inaugural FIFA/CIES/NMMU programme in sport management has recently been appointed to a full time position within FIFA as a Marketing Alliances Manager. In this regard Solomon will be part of a team that is responsible for managing all marketing related activities and events with the Commercial Affiliates of FIFA.

The 5th edition of the FIFA/CIES/NMMU programme in sport management got underway with a bang on Monday 3 October 2011 with a formal opening ceremony followed immediately by the commencement of the first block of lectures which included an international speaker from FIFA. That evening saw the students attend the certificate presentation ceremony of the 4th edition students. The rest of the week will see the students under the guidance of Vernon Oosthuizen and John Burger as they tackle management and marketing concepts.

Monday, 3 October 2011 saw 20 happy and excited FIFA/CIES/NMMU Sport Management students receive their qualifications at a distinguished certificate presentation ceremony that took place in the NMMU conference centre.

Congratulations to Phumi Mokoena (FIFA/CIES/NMMU class of 2007) who recently completed his MSc degree in Sport Management at the University of Worcester (UK).
